Does Bedroom Furniture Have to Match? [A Quick Guide]

Regardless of whether you’re a homeowner or renter, designing your bedroom to look and feel the way you want it to is so, so important.

And one of the most common questions people ask when it comes to designing their bedroom (after do I need a rug!) is: does my bedroom furniture have to match?

It’s a simple question but one with huge ramifications – if you’re limited to furniture that matches, you’re sort of stuck buying furniture from a single range.

Let’s take a look.

Does My Bedroom Furniture Have to Match?

No, the good news is your bedroom furniture doesn’t have to match. While you can certainly stick to buying your bedroom furniture from a single range or set, there is no need to limit yourself to just these items.

In fact, mixing and matching your furniture can help create a much more interesting and dynamic space.

Advantages of Matching Your Bedroom Furniture

Cohesive Look

One of the big advantages of matching your bedroom furniture is that you know everything will work together, and there’s no second-guessing yourself as to whether two items will work together in the same room.

For example, if you know you bedroom mirror is from the same range as your bed frame and dresser were, you don’t have to worry about whether they’ll all work together. So your only focus will be where to put it!

As well, the design from one area of your room will flow to other areas of your room very smoothly when everything matches – a designer’s dream!

Easy to Decorate

It’s easy to add new furniture as and when you want – you just have to add new pieces from the same range.

Essentially, the only choice you need to make is right at the beginning of the bedroom decoration process – what range/set do you want to buy your furniture from?

From then on, you have an almost ‘plug and play’ solution – you save up for another furniture item, and then purchase it from the range you’re using.

Simple!

Disadvantages of Matching Your Bedroom Furniture

Lacking Imagination

The big drawback of matching your bedroom furniture is that everything can feel ‘samey’ – there’s a lack of imagination that has gone into designing your bedroom.

For a lot of people, this simply isn’t acceptable – your bedroom is where you spend so much of your time, so the thought of not putting much thought into this area of your home is unimaginable.

Also, when all the furniture in your room looks the same, you’ve lost the opportunity for creativity and personal expression. It can all seem very cookie cutter.

Tips for Successfully Mixing and Matching Furniture

If you’ve decided to mix and match your bedroom furniture, good for you!

We’re here to help, so have a read through some of our tips/basic principles to use to ensure you get the best out of your space.

Stick to a Color Scheme

Even though you can choose any piece of furniture that you like, it’s best to try and stick to a central color scheme, and base your furniture picks around that.

If you’re worried about re-painting your room, don’t be – read our guide here and you’ll be fine!

This may be choosing one main color and then allowing yourself to find items that contain different shades of this color, or it may be choosing a central, neutral color to use for most of your room, and then buying furniture that contain accent colors that will stand out.

Again, this is all down to personal preference, but sticking to a color scheme can make your life a lot easier than buying any color furniture you see!

Try to Use the Same Materials

Despite the furniture you’ll be buying not having to be from the same set, we’d advise that you try and keep it all in the same material.

I’m a massive fan of wood, so all of the furniture in my room is wood. This helps to create a general mood for the room, even though I have newer wooden pieces mixed with older, antique wooden furniture.

Alternatively, you might prefer more modern, metallic furniture, which is fine – the important thing is to try not to alternate between the two once you decide!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can You Mix Different Color Bedroom Furniture?

Yes you can, but try to keep it focused around one neutral color, and have your different furniture items work off that color.

For example, find different colors that complement one another, or have some of your furniture pieces include accent colors that will make them stand out against the main, neutral color.

How Do You Match Different Furniture in a Bedroom?

As long as you stick to a few basic rules, it’s easy to match different bedroom furniture.

The two main rules are 1) stick to one central color theme, and 2) keep the same material choice for all of your items.

If you’re a fan of wooden furniture like me, stick to wood for all your bedroom furniture. A bit of metal or glass is fine, but my main theme will be wooden furniture, and this will create a cohesive look throughout my room.
